James Longstreet (1821-1904) was a prominent Confederate general during the American Civil War. He was born in South Carolina and grew up in Georgia. He attended West Point and graduated in 1842, ranking 54th out of 56 cadets.

Longstreet served in the Mexican-American War and was wounded at the Battle of Chapultepec. After the war, he remained in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Texas and New Mexico. However, when the Civil War broke out, Longstreet resigned his commission and joined the Confederate Army.

During the Civil War, Longstreet served in many of the major battles of the conflict, including First Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. He was considered one of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s most trusted and capable subordinates. Longstreet is best known for his role in the Battle of Gettysburg, where he commanded the Confederate forces that launched Pickett’s Charge.

After the war, Longstreet faced criticism from some former Confederates who blamed him for the defeat at Gettysburg. He also became a controversial figure for his post-war political activities, including his support for Republican presidential candidate Ulysses S. Grant and his role in the Republican-led Reconstruction government in Louisiana. Some former Confederates accused him of betrayal and labeled him a scalawag.

Despite the controversy surrounding him, Longstreet remained active in politics and served as the U.S. ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during President William McKinley’s administration. He also wrote his memoirs, which remain an important source of information about the Civil War.
